When is Labour Day?
In 2026, Labour Day falls on Friday, May 1, 2026. It is a Paraguayan national public holiday. Government offices and many businesses close, subject to essential-service and employer arrangements.
History of Labour Day
May Day originated internationally in campaigns for an eight-hour working day and in memory of workers prosecuted after the 1886 Haymarket conflict in Chicago. Paraguay’s labour history gave the date its own meaning. A documented early commemoration occurred among railway workshop workers at Sapucai in 1902, within a period when artisans and wage workers were creating associations and debating hours and conditions.
By the early twentieth century, federations, newspapers and occupational groups used May 1 for education, solidarity and demands including the eight-hour day. Contemporary Paraguay combines formal employment with extensive informal, agricultural, domestic and self-employed work. Public debate on the holiday therefore reaches wages, workplace safety, social-security access, care work, rural labour and the practical enforcement of rights.
Law No. 7544 designates May 1 a non-movable national holiday. Many employees rest or join union and public programmes, but hospitals, transport, hospitality and other essential or authorised workplaces continue under applicable labour rules. The holiday honours workers; it should not be described mainly as a generic leisure date or separated from Paraguay’s specific organising history.
How Labour Day is observed
May 1 is a non-movable national public holiday; worker organisations may hold programmes while essential and authorised services continue under labour rules.
Traditions of Labour Day
Worker organisation
Paraguayan unions and professional associations may hold assemblies, statements or marches addressing wages, formalisation, safety and social-security coverage.
Labour-history discussion
Public programmes recall railway workers at Sapucai and the development of Paraguay’s unions, eight-hour-day demands and labour legislation.
Rest with exceptions
Many employees spend the holiday with family, while medical, transport, hospitality and other essential or authorised services continue operating.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Paraguay national holiday law and official calendar. Paraguay’s Law No. 7544 allows the executive to transfer specified civic holidays and appoint limited special holidays. Check the annual official calendar for the practical day off.
