When is Christmas Day?
In 2026, Christmas Day falls on Friday, December 25, 2026. It is classified here as a Polish public holiday.
History of Christmas Day
Christmas Day follows the intimate Wigilia evening with a more relaxed day of worship, family meals and visiting. The Nativity remains the religious centre of the holiday, while the winter break makes room for several generations to gather around traditions that differ from home to home.
December 25 is a statutory day off in Poland, as it is across much of Europe. Although public life slows sharply, the day is not only about closure: parish services, hospitality and the warmth of a long family meal make it a living continuation of the season begun on Christmas Eve.
Christmas Day is pierwszy dzień Bożego Narodzenia in the statute. It follows Wigilia's ritual meal and often begins later, with Mass, a fuller menu and visits rather than the formal sequence of Christmas Eve. Kolędy continue at church and home, while elaborate szopki—Nativity scenes with architectural forms—are especially associated with Kraków's recognised craft tradition. Gifts may be attributed to different figures depending on region, including Saint Nicholas, the Star Man, an angel or the Christ Child. These variations are part of Polish cultural geography, not contradictions. December 25 is fixed and statutory; a Saturday occurrence affects working-time calculation, while a Sunday occurrence does not create Monday leave.
How Christmas Day is observed
A nationwide statutory public holiday. Government offices close; shops, attractions and transport may use Christmas timetables. Under Labour Code Article 130, a statutory holiday occurring on a day other than Sunday reduces working time by eight hours in the settlement period; for a typical Monday-to-Friday schedule, a Saturday occurrence therefore requires another rostered day off.
