When is Immaculate Conception?

In 2026, Immaculate Conception falls on Tuesday, December 8, 2026. It is classified here as a Portuguese public holiday.

History of Immaculate Conception

The Immaculate Conception on December 8 is a mandatory national holiday in Portugal. The Catholic doctrine concerns Mary’s conception free from original sin, not the conception of Jesus. It has exceptional national significance because King João IV proclaimed Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception queen and patroness of Portugal after the Restoration. Portuguese monarchs thereafter ceased wearing the crown in the traditional manner, symbolically offering royal sovereignty to Mary.

Churches dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição hold Masses, processions and local festas, while many households use the holiday for Advent and Christmas preparation. In some inland communities, young people gather wood for the communal Christmas madeiro on or around December 8. The national date is fixed and is not moved when it meets a weekend. Local patronal programmes vary and should not be assumed to occur in every parish.

Articles 234–236 of Portugal’s Labour Code distinguish mandatory holidays from the optional municipal holiday and Carnival Tuesday. A fixed national holiday remains on its calendar date when it falls at a weekend; Portuguese law does not supply a general substitute Monday. Businesses that are legally permitted or required to operate can schedule work under holiday-work and compensatory-rest rules. Autonomous-region and municipal calendars may add local dates without changing this nationwide status.
