When is Christmas Day?

In 2026, Christmas Day falls on Friday, December 25, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Christmas Day

Christmas Day commemorates the birth of Jesus in Rwanda's many Christian traditions. Catholic and Protestant churches shaped education and public life during colonial and postcolonial periods, sometimes resisting violence and sometimes becoming implicated in political exclusion; present worship should not be used to flatten that institutional history.

Today the day centres church services, choir music, household reunion and generosity according to denomination and family means. It begins a two-day statutory sequence with Boxing Day, whose weekend compensation is governed by the special rule for consecutive holidays.

Presidential Order No. 062/01 of 2022 applies the official calendar to public- and private-sector employers and employees. Except for April 7, a holiday on Saturday or Sunday makes the following working day a public holiday; two consecutive weekend holidays are compensated by only one working day, and coinciding holidays receive one following working day. The calendar records the original date and, where applicable, the separate observed date.

How Christmas Day is observed

Traditions of Christmas Day

  • Christmas worship

Churches celebrate Christmas Eve or morning with scripture, choirs and Nativity programmes in Kinyarwanda and other languages. Church services, prayer and music give the day its religious centre, with the form of worship reflecting local denominations and community practice.

  • Homecoming meal

Relatives gather and share food according to household means; an elaborate feast is not universal. Relatives and friends may share meals or visit one another, especially when the date forms part of a longer public-holiday period.

  • Giving and care

Churches and community groups support vulnerable families, children or patients through food, clothing and visits. Travel, markets and public events follow local patterns, while opening hours depend on the holiday’s legal scope and current official guidance.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Rwanda official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Rwanda may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
