When is National Heroes' Day?

In 2026, National Heroes' Day falls on Sunday, February 1, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of National Heroes' Day

National Heroes' Day honours people placed by the state in the Imanzi, Imena and Ingenzi categories for exceptional sacrifice or achievement. The official pantheon includes figures from the monarchy, anti-colonial resistance, public life and the struggle against the Genocide against the Tutsi, so the day teaches a state-defined civic ethic as well as individual biography.

Commemoration is organised through wreaths, speeches and school programmes about ubutwari—heroism expressed through integrity, courage and service. Formal designation is a legal and political process; responsible history distinguishes official recognition from the wider range of Rwandans whose bravery is remembered by families and communities.

Presidential Order No. 062/01 of 2022 applies the official calendar to public- and private-sector employers and employees. Except for April 7, a holiday on Saturday or Sunday makes the following working day a public holiday; two consecutive weekend holidays are compensated by only one working day, and coinciding holidays receive one following working day. The calendar records the original date and, where applicable, the separate observed date.

How National Heroes' Day is observed

The named holiday falls Sunday, February 1 in 2026 and is also observed on Monday, February 2 under the weekend rule. Commemoration itself remains tied to February 1.

Traditions of National Heroes' Day

  • Wreaths at Heroes' sites

State representatives honour nationally designated heroes at memorial sites, including the National Heroes Mausoleum. National and local institutions may hold flag-raising events, commemorations or official addresses connected with the history behind the holiday.

  • School civic education

Students discuss the official categories Imanzi, Imena and Ingenzi and how integrity, sacrifice and service are evaluated. Schools, museums and broadcasters often revisit the people and events associated with the date, adding context to the public celebration.

  • Annual theme

Speeches and diaspora programmes connect historic heroism with present conduct, while the state determines formal hero designation. Concerts, parades, memorial visits or family gatherings allow communities to mark the occasion beyond the formal state programme.
