When is New Year’s Day?

In 2026, New Year’s Day falls on Thursday, January 1, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of New Year’s Day

New Year’s Day begins the Gregorian civil year on January 1 and is expressly named in article 185 of São Tomé and Príncipe's Labour Code. It is a secular legal date even though households may combine it with church services, year-end travel or other personal practices.

New Year observance follows Réveillon gatherings on the previous evening. The government's guide records a recognisably São Toméan beach practice: some celebrants go to the sea to symbolically wash away the old year. That popular custom sits alongside quieter family visits and does not define every island household.

New Year’s Day is one of the mandatory holidays in article 185 of the 2019 Labour Code. It is a paid day of rest; necessary work is governed by the Code's holiday-work and compensation provisions. Article 185 expressly moves a mandatory holiday falling on Saturday back to Friday and one falling on Sunday forward to Monday. This calendar represents any such substitute as a separate, non-indexable entry rather than hiding it in an observed-date field.

How New Year’s Day is observed

Mandatory paid holiday on Thursday, January 1, 2026. Friday, January 2 is not an automatic bridge day. Current government notices, employer policies and local schedules in São Tomé and Príncipe should be checked for closures, substitute dates and public-service arrangements.

Traditions of New Year’s Day

  • Household and community practice

People exchange wishes, telephone or visit relatives and may share food after New Year's Eve. Practice varies between São Tomé and Príncipe, between towns and rural districts, and by faith, family resources and personal choice.

  • Documented public observance

The government guide documents beach visits and symbolic washing at the turn of the year, while congregations and broadcasters may offer prayers or messages. This is a documented form of observance, not a claim that every district follows one programme.

  • Planning the day

Hospitality, transport, health and security services may operate, and January 2 hours must be checked separately. Residents and travellers should verify the year's government, regional, transport and workplace notices.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official São Tomé and Príncipe official holiday calendar or legislation.
