When is Christmas Day?

In 2026, Christmas Day falls on Friday, December 25, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Christmas Day

Christmas Day commemorates the birth of Jesus on December 25 and is expressly a mandatory holiday in article 185, where it is paired with the family. Catholic Christianity is historically influential in the islands, but the legal day off applies without requiring Christian observance and should include Protestant, other-faith and non-religious residents in its practical description.

Christmas follows Advent and Christmas Eve preparations. The government's guide records Midnight Mass, family dinner, music and visiting as common practices. Foods, gifts and travel vary widely by household means and island location, and essential workers may spend part of the holiday on duty.

Christmas Day is one of the mandatory holidays in article 185 of the 2019 Labour Code. It is a paid day of rest; necessary work is governed by the Code's holiday-work and compensation provisions. Article 185 expressly moves a mandatory holiday falling on Saturday back to Friday and one falling on Sunday forward to Monday. This calendar represents any such substitute as a separate, non-indexable entry rather than hiding it in an observed-date field.

How Christmas Day is observed

Mandatory paid holiday on Friday, December 25, 2026; there is no additional weekend substitute because the date already falls on a working day.

Traditions of Christmas Day

  • Household and community practice

Christian households may attend Christmas Eve or Christmas Day worship, share a family meal, sing or exchange affordable gifts. Practice varies between São Tomé and Príncipe, between towns and rural districts, and by faith, family resources and personal choice.

  • Documented public observance

Parishes may organise Midnight Mass, choirs and children's programmes, while community and media events extend through the year-end season. This is a documented form of observance, not a claim that every district follows one programme.

  • Planning the day

Book inter-island travel and shopping early and verify health, hospitality, transport and security service hours. Residents and travellers should verify the year's government, regional, transport and workplace notices.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official São Tomé and Príncipe official holiday calendar or legislation.
