When is Good Friday?

In 2026, Good Friday falls on Friday, April 3, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Good Friday

Good Friday commemorates Jesus's crucifixion and belongs to the Christian Paschal Triduum. Catholic, Anglican and other churches have shaped Seychelles since the nineteenth century through worship, schools and social institutions, but their theology and liturgy are not interchangeable and the legal holiday does not imply universal religious participation.

The date moves with Western Easter and precedes Easter Sunday by two days. Locally documented Catholic observance includes fasting, Stations of the Cross, the Passion reading, veneration of the cross and communion from hosts consecrated on Holy Thursday; other denominations announce their own services.

The Public Holidays Act makes scheduled and specially ordered dates closed holidays in courts, government offices and banks and legal holidays throughout Seychelles. Section 4 adds the next day that is not already a public holiday only when a named holiday falls on Sunday; there is no automatic Saturday substitute. Tourism, transport, health and other necessary services may continue, and employees should apply current employment regulations and any more favourable agreement to holiday work.

How Good Friday is observed

Nationwide legal holiday on Friday, April 3, 2026, calculated two days before Western Easter Sunday. Congregations publish their own worship times.

Traditions of Good Friday

  • Way of the Cross

Catholic parishes may hold Stations of the Cross and a Passion service; Anglican and other churches follow their own Good Friday liturgies.

  • Fasting and restraint

Some Catholics fast and abstain and other Christians simplify meals or entertainment, but rules and personal practice are not identical.

  • Parish and island schedules

Worship times and transport differ among MahΓ©, Praslin, La Digue and smaller communities, so participants rely on parish and operator notices.
