When is Immaculate Conception?

In 2026, Immaculate Conception falls on Tuesday, December 8, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Immaculate Conception

The Immaculate Conception is the Catholic doctrine that Mary was preserved from original sin from the first moment of her own conception. It does not refer to Jesus's virginal conception, a frequent confusion worth correcting, and its statutory status does not oblige non-Catholics to share the doctrine.

The feast has a particular visible setting in Victoria because the Catholic cathedral is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. A documented December 8 observance joined a procession of clergy, religious and lay worshippers through the city with Mass at the cathedral, while parishes and families elsewhere follow their own arrangements.

The Public Holidays Act makes scheduled and specially ordered dates closed holidays in courts, government offices and banks and legal holidays throughout Seychelles. Section 4 adds the next day that is not already a public holiday only when a named holiday falls on Sunday; there is no automatic Saturday substitute. Tourism, transport, health and other necessary services may continue, and employees should apply current employment regulations and any more favourable agreement to holiday work.

How Immaculate Conception is observed

Nationwide legal holiday on Tuesday, December 8, 2026. Catholic worship is distinct from the legal closure applying across the country.

Traditions of Immaculate Conception

  • Victoria procession and Mass

A documented local observance includes a procession through Victoria followed by Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

  • Marian prayer

Catholic participants bring intentions for family and community and sing or pray to Mary; other Christians and faiths do not necessarily share the doctrine.

  • Advent distinction

The December 8 feast concerns Mary's conception, not Jesus's birth, and falls within but remains distinct from preparations for Christmas.
