When is Christmas Day?

In 2026, Christmas Day falls on Friday, December 25, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Christmas Day

Christmas Day commemorates the birth of Jesus on December 25 and entered Sierra Leone's public calendar through British colonial law and Christian institutional history. It is now a scheduled national holiday, but Sierra Leone has no state religion and the legal day off neither makes the Muslim majority Christian nor confines celebration to historically Christian Krio communities.

Anglican, Methodist, Catholic, Pentecostal and other congregations hold different Christmas Eve and morning services. Interfaith marriage and mixed-faith households are common, and neighbours may exchange food or greetings across religious lines. That hospitality is well documented but should not erase smaller disputes or differences in belief and economic means.

Christmas Day is named in the schedule to the Public Holidays Act and appears in the official 2026 calendar. Cap. 58 closes public offices and banks and moves a scheduled holiday falling on Sunday to the next day that is not already a public holiday; it does not create a general Saturday substitute. Under the Employment Act, paid-public-holiday protections expressly reach casual and temporary workers, and qualifying excess hours on public holidays attract a 100% supplement absent a different written agreement.

How Christmas Day is observed

Scheduled public holiday on Friday, December 25, 2026; Boxing Day follows on Saturday without an automatic Monday substitute.

Traditions of Christmas Day

  • Household and community practice

Christian households may attend worship, cook a special meal, visit relatives, sing or exchange affordable clothing and gifts. Practice differs among regions, congregations, ethnic communities, mixed-faith families and households with different resources.

  • Documented public observance

A documented 2025 observance included Christmas Mass in Bonthe; other congregations publish choirs, services and children's programmes locally. This is documented Sierra Leonean practice, not a claim that every town stages the same programme.

  • Practical planning

Year-end transport and markets are busy; plan purchases early and check essential services and inter-district travel. Confirm the current State House, transport, congregation and employer notices before relying on hours or access.
