When is Eid al-Fitr?

In 2026, Eid al-Fitr falls on Friday, March 20, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Eid al-Fitr

Eid al-Fitr, also called KoritΓ© in parts of West Africa, begins Shawwal and ends Ramadan's month of dawn-to-sunset fasting. Its religious focus includes communal prayer, gratitude, charity and renewed social ties. Zakat al-fitr is due before the prayer so people in need can share the feast.

Sierra Leone's Muslim communities are diverse and include Sunni, Ahmadiyya and other traditions; some families also include Christians. Interfaith visits and shared food are documented, but coexistence should not be romanticised as the absence of every disagreement. The Inter-Religious Council's continuing work shows that tolerance is maintained through institutions and daily relationships.

Eid al-Fitr is named in the schedule to the Public Holidays Act and appears in the official 2026 calendar. Cap. 58 closes public offices and banks and moves a scheduled holiday falling on Sunday to the next day that is not already a public holiday; it does not create a general Saturday substitute. Under the Employment Act, paid-public-holiday protections expressly reach casual and temporary workers, and qualifying excess hours on public holidays attract a 100% supplement absent a different written agreement.

How Eid al-Fitr is observed

Nationwide public holiday confirmed by government notice for Friday, March 20, 2026; future dates await Sierra Leone's lunar announcement.

Traditions of Eid al-Fitr

  • Household and community practice

Muslims bathe and dress for prayer, give zakat al-fitr, exchange greetings and visit relatives for meals after Ramadan. Practice differs among regions, congregations, ethnic communities, mixed-faith families and households with different resources.

  • Documented public observance

A documented State Lodge observance gathered worshippers for prayer and a khutbah emphasising gratitude, generosity, solidarity and environmental stewardship. This is documented Sierra Leonean practice, not a claim that every town stages the same programme.

  • Practical planning

Prayer grounds and roads become busy; use the confirmed government date rather than an astronomical forecast for later years. Confirm the current State House, transport, congregation and employer notices before relying on hours or access.
