When is Good Friday?
In 2026, Good Friday falls on Friday, April 3, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Good Friday
Good Friday commemorates Jesus's crucifixion and death and falls two days before Western Easter Sunday. It is one of the Christian dates in the Public Holidays Act's schedule. The national legal holiday does not imply Christian observance by Sierra Leone's Muslim majority or by followers of other and blended traditions.
Anglican, Methodist, Catholic, Pentecostal and other churches follow different liturgies. Services can include Passion readings, preaching, restrained music, fasting or Stations of the Cross. Sierra Leone's Christianity has Krio and missionary histories but also long provincial and independent-church histories; it should not be presented as solely a Freetown or Krio practice.
Good Friday is named in the schedule to the Public Holidays Act and appears in the official 2026 calendar. Cap. 58 closes public offices and banks and moves a scheduled holiday falling on Sunday to the next day that is not already a public holiday; it does not create a general Saturday substitute. Under the Employment Act, paid-public-holiday protections expressly reach casual and temporary workers, and qualifying excess hours on public holidays attract a 100% supplement absent a different written agreement.
How Good Friday is observed
Nationwide public holiday on Friday, April 3, 2026, expressly confirmed with Easter Monday in the State House notice.
Traditions of Good Friday
Household and community practice
Christians may fast, pray, attend a solemn service or prepare quietly for Easter according to denomination and health. Practice differs among regions, congregations, ethnic communities, mixed-faith families and households with different resources.
Documented public observance
Congregations publish Passion readings, preaching, choir or Stations of the Cross; programme form is not uniform. This is documented Sierra Leonean practice, not a claim that every town stages the same programme.
Practical planning
Check church, ferry, road and business schedules across the four-day Easter period. Confirm the current State House, transport, congregation and employer notices before relying on hours or access.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Sierra Leone official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Sierra Leone may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
