When is Christmas Eve?
In 2026, Christmas Eve falls on Thursday, December 24, 2026. It is classified here as a Slovak public holiday.
History of Christmas Eve
Christmas Eve, Štedrý deň, is the emotional centre of Christmas for many Slovak families. The meal often begins with wafers and honey, followed by dishes that may include kapustnica, a sauerkraut soup, fish, legumes, dried fruit and opekance. Customs vary by region and household, but the evening’s patient preparation and gathering are widely recognisable.
December 24 is a day of rest for the full civil day under Act No. 241/1993 and leads into Christmas Day and the Second Day of Christmas. A separate Labour Code rule prohibits most employee retail sales only after noon, which explains why shops may trade during the morning. National tourism organisation Slovakia Travel notes that many customs combine Christian celebration with older winter traditions; nativity plays, carols and the Bethlehem Light shared by Slovak Scouts give the evening a public as well as domestic presence.
Christmas Eve in Slovakia is a nationwide day of rest under the current Act No. 241/1993, whether classified there as a state holiday or as another holiday day of rest. Slovakia does not transfer a holiday to Monday merely because its calendar date falls on Saturday or Sunday. The current Labour Code also generally prohibits assigning employees to retail sales on this date, subject to narrow statutory exceptions; on December 24 that retail restriction begins at noon. Continuous operations, health services, transport and other legally permitted work can still run, so a day of rest should not be described as a complete national shutdown.
How Christmas Eve is observed
A nationwide day of rest throughout December 24; the separate general restriction on employee retail sales begins at noon, subject to statutory exceptions.
