When is SYL Youth Day?
In 2026, SYL Youth Day falls on Friday, May 15, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of SYL Youth Day
Somali Youth League Day on May 15 commemorates the founding in Mogadishu in 1943 of the Somali Youth Club, later renamed the Somali Youth League. Thirteen young founders created an organisation that grew from civic self-help into the leading nationalist party in the UN Trust Territory and helped press for independence and Somali unity.
The SYL was pivotal but not alone: the Somali National League, United Somali Party, religious leaders, women, workers and other organisers also shaped anti-colonial politics in different territories. In 2026 the federal president marked the 83rd anniversary alongside Somali Youth Day. Contemporary speeches connect that legacy to young people's participation, but official claims about unity or security should not be mistaken for unanimous political opinion.
Villa Somalia lists May 15 among federal national holidays. Federal civil-service rules provide rest on government-recognised holidays, while the sources reviewed do not establish an identical nationwide paid-private-sector entitlement. Somaliland does not list SYL Day among its twelve statutory holidays.
This is a Federal Republic calendar entry. Federal rules and announcements do not prove identical implementation by every federal member state, private employer or territory under Somaliland's separate administration. Public gatherings and service availability can also change with local security conditions.

Traditions of SYL Youth Day
Household and community practice
Young people may join civic discussions, sport, volunteering or cultural programmes connecting the 1943 movement with present opportunities and concerns. Practice varies by family resources, locality, religious outlook and displacement or diaspora circumstances.
Organised observance
Federal ceremonies include flowers at the SYL monument, speeches and youth-organisation events, with other cities arranging their own activities. Organisers and local authorities set the programme, access rules and security arrangements for each place and year.
Practical planning
Security and traffic controls around Mogadishu ceremonies can change, and Friday overlap does not justify assuming the same substitute in every sector. Check current federal, state, Somaliland, municipal, congregation and employer notices instead of assuming a uniform national shutdown.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Somalia official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Somalia may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
