When is Labour Day?

In 2026, Labour Day falls on Friday, May 1, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Labour Day

Labour Day in Somalia is the May 1 observance connected with the international workers' movement and contemporary demands for decent employment, safety, skills and freedom of association. Its meaning extends beyond salaried offices: Somalia's labour force includes pastoralism, farming, markets, transport, domestic work, public service and a very large informal economy.

Because May 1 fell on Friday in 2026, the Federal Ministry of Labour held its official programme on Saturday, May 2. More than a thousand workers, union representatives, officials and development partners discussed employment-intensive investment, youth unemployment and social dialogue. The event documents an observed shift in the programme, but it should not be presented as proof that every private business closed both days.

Villa Somalia lists May 1 as a federal national holiday, and the Ministry says both government and non-government workers are released for the annual date. Somaliland's Labour Law separately makes it a fully paid holiday. Federal civil-service law moves a recognised holiday that overlaps Friday to the next day; in 2026 the official commemoration accordingly occurred May 2.

The Federal Government and Somaliland both recognise this occasion, but they do so through separate rules and may announce different durations, substitute days or lunar dates. Federal member states and private employers can also issue their own operational notices, so shared religious or historical meaning does not imply one countrywide closure pattern.

How Labour Day is observed

Public holiday on Friday, May 1, 2026, with the federal programme held Saturday, May 2 after the weekly-rest overlap; workplace implementation still varies.

Traditions of Labour Day

  • Household and community practice

Workers may rest, meet colleagues, join a union programme or discuss wages, safety, dignity and access to sustainable employment. Practice varies by family resources, locality, religious outlook and displacement or diaspora circumstances.

  • Organised observance

Government, FESTU, employers and development partners organise conferences or rallies rather than one compulsory nationwide parade. Organisers and local authorities set the programme, access rules and security arrangements for each place and year.

  • Practical planning

Confirm whether a workplace applied May 2 as the substitute and whether essential or informal-sector activity continued. Check current federal, state, Somaliland, municipal, congregation and employer notices instead of assuming a uniform national shutdown.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Somalia official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Somalia may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
