When is Christmas Day?

In 2026, Christmas Day falls on Friday, December 25, 2026. It is classified here as a Spanish public holiday.

History of Christmas Day

Christmas Day sits within Spain’s layered labour calendar, which combines national holidays, choices made by the seventeen autonomous communities and Ceuta and Melilla, and two local holidays selected municipally. Paid labour holidays are non-recoverable and normally cannot exceed fourteen each year, including the two local dates. New Year’s Day, Labour Day, October 12 and Christmas Day must be respected nationally; other national dates can be substituted or shifted under the statutory framework, so a label must reflect the official calendar for the relevant year and territory.

The Ministry of Labour publishes the consolidated annual table in the Boletín Oficial del Estado after receiving each territorial calendar. A Sunday clash is generally transferred to the following Monday, but autonomous communities may replace that Monday rest with one of their own traditional festivals. Spain therefore has no single rule that makes every familiar religious feast a day off everywhere. December 25 is one of four holidays every autonomous community must retain; Christmas Eve remains culturally central but is not itself a national labour holiday. Travellers and employers should still check the autonomous-community and municipal calendars rather than infer closures from a nationwide name alone.

How Christmas Day is observed

A paid, non-recoverable labour holiday across Spain, subject to the official annual rules for Sunday transfer and territorial substitution where legally permitted.

Traditions of Christmas Day

  • Public and family life

Christmas Day brings family meals, visits or public programmes whose form differs across Spain’s autonomous communities and language traditions.

  • Labour-calendar practice

Schools, offices and ordinary businesses follow the applicable autonomous and local calendar, while transport and hospitality publish special schedules.

  • Distinctive observance

Families continue Christmas Eve gatherings with festive meals, church services, music and visits, while regional menus remain highly diverse. Participation and emphasis vary substantially between cities, rural areas and Spain’s different historic regions.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Government of Spain labour-calendar guidance. Autonomous communities and municipalities set additional dates and may replace certain optional national holidays.
