When is National Heroes Day?
In 2026, National Heroes Day falls on Saturday, March 14, 2026. It is a Vincentian public holiday. Government offices and many businesses close, subject to essential-service and employer arrangements.
History of National Heroes Day
National Heroes Day is held on March 14, the anniversary of the death of the Garifuna leader Paramount Chief Joseph Chatoyer at Dorsetshire Hill in 1795. Chatoyer led resistance during the conflict commonly called the Second Carib War, when British colonial forces sought control of Saint Vincent. His death did not erase that resistance; it became central to Vincentian memory and the wider Garifuna story.
In 2002 the Right Excellent Joseph Chatoyer was declared Saint Vincent and the Grenadines’ first National Hero, and March 14 was named National Heroes Day. Government commemorations gather at the obelisk at Dorsetshire Hill for wreath laying, speeches and tribute. Visiting Garifuna delegations underline the connection between Yurumein, the Garifuna name for Saint Vincent, and descendant communities across Central America and the diaspora.
The day falls within National Heroes and Heritage Month and reaches beyond a single biography. It recalls Kalinago and Garifuna survival, the exile of thousands to Balliceaux after British victory, and present debates about who else should receive national-hero status. Ceremonies are therefore both solemn remembrance and an active discussion about courage, leadership, historical repair and the people represented in the national story.
