When is Boxing Day?

In 2026, Boxing Day falls on Saturday, December 26, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Boxing Day

Boxing Day on December 26 is an inherited British calendar name historically connected with gifts or gratuities to servants, tradespeople and people in need. Tanzania retained the date in its postcolonial statutory schedule, but everyday observance now belongs to the local year-end break rather than requiring replication of one Victorian British practice.

Some Christian households continue Christmas visiting, while residents of other faiths may rest, travel, meet friends or work. Calling all hospitality ‘Boxing Day tradition’ would manufacture uniformity. The 2026 Saturday placement is also legally important: the current revised Act removed the older weekend-substitution provision still quoted on secondary law sites, and the official calendar lists no Monday replacement.

The Public Holidays Act, Cap. 35 R.E. 2023, places this holiday in the Union schedule and permits the President to add or substitute dates by proclamation. Unlike older editions still reproduced online, the current Act contains no automatic Saturday-or-Sunday replacement section; its 2026 calendar therefore supplies no Monday substitute for a weekend date. A department head may require public servants to work. On the mainland section 26 of the Employment and Labour Relations Act requires double basic-wage pay for holiday hours worked; Zanzibar employment is separately governed by section 67 of its 2005 Act, which provides a full-pay holiday or the specified compensatory-day/double-pay treatment.

How Boxing Day is observed

Nationwide statutory public holiday on Saturday, December 26, 2026, with no automatic Monday substitute. Current government notices, employer policies and local schedules in Tanzania should be checked for closures, substitute dates and public-service arrangements.

Traditions of Boxing Day

  • Continued visits

Households may visit people missed on Christmas Day, share remaining food or rest, but the legal date prescribes no charitable or religious ritual.

  • Summer outings

Beaches, parks, football and other outings are possibilities around the coast and inland, shaped by weather, cost and local custom.

  • Return and work planning

Travellers and employees check transport and workplace notices; the Saturday placement in 2026 creates no automatic Monday substitute under the current Act.
