When is Eid al-Adha?

In 2026, Eid al-Adha falls on Wednesday, May 27, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Eid al-Adha

Eid al-Adha, called Id-el-Haj in the schedule, coincides with the Hajj season and recalls Ibrahim's willingness to obey God. Tanzania's Act provides one public holiday. Muslim communities on the mainland, Unguja and Pemba share the festival while following local religious authorities for the lunar date; cultural expression and household resources vary widely.

Zanzibar's official record confirms prayer in Ole Kianga, Pemba and the presidential Eid council on May 27, 2026. Congregational prayer, hospitality and distribution of sacrificial meat connect worship with care for relatives and people in need. Not every Muslim can or must arrange an individual animal, and responsible description avoids reducing Eid to slaughter.

The Public Holidays Act, Cap. 35 R.E. 2023, places this holiday in the Union schedule and permits the President to add or substitute dates by proclamation. Unlike older editions still reproduced online, the current Act contains no automatic Saturday-or-Sunday replacement section; its 2026 calendar therefore supplies no Monday substitute for a weekend date. A department head may require public servants to work. On the mainland section 26 of the Employment and Labour Relations Act requires double basic-wage pay for holiday hours worked; Zanzibar employment is separately governed by section 67 of its 2005 Act, which provides a full-pay holiday or the specified compensatory-day/double-pay treatment.

How Eid al-Adha is observed

Nationwide statutory public holiday on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, confirmed through the 2026 religious observance. Current government notices, employer policies and local schedules in Tanzania should be checked for closures, substitute dates and public-service arrangements.

Traditions of Eid al-Adha

  • Communal prayer

Muslim communities gather for morning prayer at mosques or grounds confirmed locally; Zanzibar's President joined the 2026 prayer in Pemba.

  • Sacrifice and distribution

Households able to do so arrange a lawful sacrifice and share meat among family, neighbours and people in need; sacrifice is not required of everyone.

  • Hajj connection

Sermons and family teaching connect Eid el-Hajj with Ibrahim and the pilgrimage, while pilgrims themselves follow schedules in Saudi Arabia.
