When is Good Friday?
In 2026, Good Friday falls on Friday, April 3, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Good Friday
Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus and falls two days before Western Easter Sunday. Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, Moravian, Pentecostal and other Tanzanian churches may observe it, but their liturgies and fasting disciplines are not identical. The nationwide legal holiday does not make Muslim, Hindu, traditional-religion or non-religious residents Christian participants.
Christianity in present Tanzania developed through several histories, including older Indian Ocean connections and nineteenth- and twentieth-century Catholic and Protestant missions under colonial conditions. Tanzanian clergy, religious and lay communities subsequently built locally led churches using Kiswahili and many other languages. Describing Good Friday as merely a European custom erases that agency, while presenting it as universal erases Tanzania's religious diversity.
The Public Holidays Act, Cap. 35 R.E. 2023, places this holiday in the Union schedule and permits the President to add or substitute dates by proclamation. Unlike older editions still reproduced online, the current Act contains no automatic Saturday-or-Sunday replacement section; its 2026 calendar therefore supplies no Monday substitute for a weekend date. A department head may require public servants to work. On the mainland section 26 of the Employment and Labour Relations Act requires double basic-wage pay for holiday hours worked; Zanzibar employment is separately governed by section 67 of its 2005 Act, which provides a full-pay holiday or the specified compensatory-day/double-pay treatment.

Traditions of Good Friday
Passion worship
Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran and other churches hold scripture, preaching, prayer or Stations of the Cross according to their own liturgies.
Fasting and restraint
Some Christians fast, abstain or keep the day quiet; disciplines vary by denomination, health and individual practice. Relatives and friends may share meals or visit one another, especially when the date forms part of a longer public-holiday period.
Easter-weekend planning
Travellers check buses, ferries and congregation times, while residents of other faiths may experience the date simply as a public holiday.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Tanzania official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Tanzania may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
