When is Chakri Day?

In 2026, Chakri Day falls on Monday, April 6, 2026. It is classified here as a Thai public holiday.

History of Chakri Day

Chakri Memorial Day in Thailand marks April 6, 1782, when Phutthayotfa Chulalok became King Rama I and founded the Chakri dynasty after the Thonburi period. Rama I moved the principal capital to the east bank of the Chao Phraya and established Rattanakosin, the historic core of Bangkok. The holiday commemorates a dynastic and state transition; it should not be reduced to a generic birthday of Bangkok, whose urban development unfolded over a much longer period.

Formal observance includes royal homage and wreath-laying at the statue of Rama I near Bangkok’s Memorial Bridge. Government bodies may hold ceremonies about the dynasty and the early Rattanakosin state. For many residents the fixed April break is quieter and more practical, arriving one week before Songkran travel. Interpretations of monarchical history differ, so this guide records the official anniversary without turning ceremonial narratives into uncontested political claims.

Monday, April 6 appears on both the 2026 government and Bank of Thailand calendars and needs no substitute. Private employers may select it among their required traditional holidays but are not compelled to mirror the full government list. Museums, transport, retail and hospitals issue their own schedules, while access near formal Bangkok ceremonies can be controlled separately.
