When is Veterans Day?
In 2026, Veterans Day falls on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. It is classified here as a Timor-Leste public holiday.
History of Veterans Day
Veterans Day honours combatants and other participants in Timor-Leste’s national-liberation struggle, including people associated with armed, clandestine and diplomatic resistance. March 3 recalls a 1981 resistance conference during a particularly difficult phase of Indonesian occupation, when structures were reorganised and Xanana Gusmão assumed senior political and FALINTIL responsibilities. The commemoration recognises service without suggesting that every veteran had the same role, experience or later political affiliation.
Law No. 3/2016 added the fixed date to the national public-holiday framework. Programmes have included Mass, wreath laying at the Garden of Heroes in Metinaro, flag ceremonies, speeches, veteran seminars and gatherings in Dili. The day is distinct from November and May independence anniversaries: it centres living veterans, deceased combatants and the intergenerational transmission of memories from resistance and conflict.
Veterans Day is a national public holiday under Law No. 10/2005 as amended, and the Government’s 2026 notice confirms the date and whether it is fixed or variable. The law generally equates a public holiday with a working day, excuses covered employees from attendance without loss of the corresponding rights, and provides compensation when holiday work is required, subject to rules for shift work and essential public services. A government “day-off tolerance” is different: its beneficiaries and hours follow the particular order and it does not silently create another permanent private-sector holiday. No substitute weekday is assumed unless an applicable law or government decision expressly provides one.
How Veterans Day is observed
