When is Labour Day?

In 2026, Labour Day falls on Friday, June 19, 2026. It is a Trinidad and Tobago public holiday. Banks and public offices close under the Public Holidays and Festivals Act, subject to essential-service and employer arrangements.

History of Labour Day

Labour Day commemorates June 19, 1937, when confrontation in the Fyzabad oil belt ignited a wider wave of labour unrest. Oilfield workers protesting low wages, racism, unsafe conditions and colonial inequality rallied around Tubal Uriah Butler. Police attempted to arrest him, and the ensuing violence included the death of Corporal Charlie King and further casualties.

Strikes and disturbances spread through oil, sugar and other sectors. They forced official investigation and accelerated legal trade-union organization; the Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union was registered later in 1937. The movement also widened demands for representation and self-government, making working-class organization an essential part of the path to independence rather than merely an industrial dispute.

June 19 became an annual national holiday in 1973. Trade unions and civic groups gather at sites in and around Fyzabad, honour movement leaders and discuss contemporary labour rights. The day recognizes workers across formal and informal sectors while keeping the specific history of the 1937 uprising at its centre.

How Labour Day is observed

Labour Day is a statutory public holiday; union marches, wreath-laying, speeches and educational events focus on Fyzabad and the continuing rights of workers.

Traditions of Labour Day

  • March through Fyzabad

Trade union members and supporters walk historic routes in the oil belt, carrying banners and recalling the uprising associated with Butler.

  • Charlie King Junction remembrance

Ceremonies and speeches near the confrontation site name those killed and place the 1937 events within the nation’s democratic development.

  • Union education and solidarity

Worker organizations hold lectures, rallies and cultural programmes linking wages, safety and representation today with achievements of earlier labour activists.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Trinidad and Tobago Public Holidays and Festivals Act. Trinidad and Tobago observes the next available day when a public holiday falls on Sunday or two public holidays coincide; lunar festival dates must be confirmed in the annual government notice.
