When is Good Friday?

In 2026, Good Friday falls on Friday, April 3, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Good Friday

Good Friday is one of the movable dates named in Tuvalu’s Public Holidays Act. It commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus in the Western Christian calendar and falls two days before Easter Sunday. In 2026 the date is April 3, confirmed by the closure calendar published by the Australian High Commission in Funafuti. The Act lists the day as appointed rather than fixing a numbered date.

Christian faith is important in many Tuvaluan communities, and congregations may hold worship, prayer, singing or quiet reflection during Holy Week. Practice varies between churches, islands and households, and not every resident participates in the same way. Christianity’s historical development in Tuvalu should also be described without implying that Indigenous Tuvaluan culture began with mission activity or ceased when churches became influential.

Good Friday falls on Friday by definition, so the weekend rule does not normally change it. The Act requires the date to be kept in public offices but permits a department head to open government work and call staff when duties require. It also restricts employers from compelling covered workers to work, apart from tightly limited immediately necessary tasks; health, transport and other services should publish specific arrangements.

Traditions of Good Friday

  • Island and family plans

Families and island communities may use Good Friday for worship, prayer, singing, reflection, family time and preparation for Easter, with practice varying among households, congregations and islands.

  • Confirm public notices

Government offices, employers, schools and travelers check current notices for Good Friday, because the Minister can appoint or move certain public holidays.

  • Necessary services

Public departments and necessary services may operate during Good Friday under applicable rules, so transport, health care and opening hours should be confirmed locally.
