When is Christmas Day?

In 2026, Christmas Day falls on Friday, December 25, 2026. It is classified here as a Ukrainian public holiday.

History of Christmas Day

Christmas Day celebrates the Nativity of Jesus and sits within one of Ukraine’s richest seasonal cycles. Ukrainian Christmas customs include carols known as koliadky, the Christmas star carried by carollers, didukh sheaves that evoke ancestors and harvest, and family tables shaped by local traditions. The precise sequence of celebrations varies among churches, families and regions.

The Labour Code lists Christmas on 25 December following the 2023 calendar reform. Major Ukrainian churches’ move to the Revised Julian calendar brought the civil holiday into line with December 25, while some communities continue to keep older dates as part of family or church practice. The public calendar should make room for both the legal date and that lived diversity.

Christmas Day in Ukraine remains part of the permanent public-holiday framework in Article 73 of Ukraine’s Labour Code. In ordinary operation, Article 67 transfers a rest day to the following weekday when a listed holiday coincides with a weekly rest day. During any legally declared period of martial law, however, Article 6 of the special labour-relations act temporarily disapplies Articles 67 and 73. That suspension does not abolish or rename the holiday; it means the calendar date does not itself guarantee paid non-working time until the ordinary provisions resume. Employers and institutions must follow the law in force for the relevant year.

How Christmas Day is observed

A statutory Ukrainian public-holiday date on December 25 under Article 73 of the Labour Code. During martial law, Article 73’s non-working-day rules do not apply, so employers, essential services and local authorities set practical schedules.

Traditions of Christmas Day

  • Koliadky carols

Groups sing Christmas carols in homes, churches and public settings, often carrying a decorated star. The practice gives Christmas Day a concrete Ukrainian community, cultural or commemorative expression.

  • Family supper and bread

Families share seasonal food and hospitality, with dishes and timing shaped by region and church tradition. The practice gives Christmas Day a concrete Ukrainian community, cultural or commemorative expression.

  • Didukh and winter craft

Some homes display a didukh, a sheaf symbolising harvest and ancestral memory, alongside handmade decorations. The practice gives Christmas Day a concrete Ukrainian community, cultural or commemorative expression.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Ukrainian law and government guidance. Working-day rules can be affected by martial-law legislation; confirm current government, employer and local-service arrangements.
