When is Statehood Day?
In 2026, Statehood Day falls on Wednesday, July 15, 2026. It is classified here as a Ukrainian public holiday.
History of Statehood Day
Ukrainian Statehood Day is observed on 15 July. It was established to affirm the long history of Ukrainian state-building, with Kyiv and the medieval polity of Rus at its centre. The anniversary is linked to the memory of Prince Volodymyr the Great and the Christianisation of Rus, events that helped shape culture, education and political development.
The date moved from 28 July to 15 July in 2023 following the calendar transition adopted by major Ukrainian churches. Its purpose is not to claim that statehood has been uninterrupted or simple; rather, it joins the medieval, early-modern and modern strands of the Ukrainian political tradition, including the ongoing defence of an independent democratic state.
Ukrainian Statehood Day remains part of the permanent public-holiday framework in Article 73 of Ukraine’s Labour Code. In ordinary operation, Article 67 transfers a rest day to the following weekday when a listed holiday coincides with a weekly rest day. During any legally declared period of martial law, however, Article 6 of the special labour-relations act temporarily disapplies Articles 67 and 73. That suspension does not abolish or rename the holiday; it means the calendar date does not itself guarantee paid non-working time until the ordinary provisions resume. Employers and institutions must follow the law in force for the relevant year.
How Statehood Day is observed
A statutory Ukrainian public-holiday date on July 15 under Article 73 of the Labour Code. During martial law, Article 73’s non-working-day rules do not apply, so employers, essential services and local authorities set practical schedules.
