When is Ascension Day?

In 2026, Ascension Day falls on Thursday, May 14, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Ascension Day

Ascension Day commemorates the Christian belief that Jesus ascended into heaven after the resurrection. It is one of several Christian feasts included in Vanuatu’s national rather than provincial calendar, reflecting the longstanding part churches play in worship, education, community organisation and social support across the archipelago.

Its civil date changes every year because it falls on the fortieth day of the Easter season, counted as 39 days after Easter Sunday. Easter Sunday is April 5 in 2026, so Ascension Day is Thursday, May 14. The Prime Minister’s Office confirms that date; an older brochure’s example date must not be treated as perpetual.

Congregations may hold worship, singing, teaching and shared meals, but local programmes vary. The nationwide legal status closes many ordinary offices and workplaces without compelling every enterprise to shut. Residents should check inter-island transport and service hours, and employees scheduled in exempt or continuous operations should confirm time-off and overtime terms rather than assume one universal pay outcome.

How Ascension Day is observed

Thursday, May 14 is the official 2026 national holiday, calculated from Easter. Older example dates must not be reused as a fixed annual rule.

Traditions of Ascension Day

  • Church worship

Participating congregations gather for biblical readings, preaching, singing and prayer about the Ascension in their usual languages and styles.

  • Fellowship and care

Church groups may share food, visit members or organise practical support, with activities planned by each congregation rather than nationally.

  • Checking services

Residents confirm office, shop and transport hours because a national Christian holiday does not require every Vanuatu service to close.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Vanuatu official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Vanuatu may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
