When is Labour Day?

In 2026, Labour Day falls on Friday, May 1, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Labour Day

Labour Day places Vanuatu within the international May Day tradition of recognising workers and collective efforts to improve conditions of employment. The holiday is relevant across a labour market that includes public service, agriculture, construction, tourism, retail, transport, domestic work and informal livelihoods. It is not limited to one union, employer or political party.

Vanuatu’s Employment Act regulates hours, Sunday and public-holiday work and overtime. Department of Labour guidance explains that employees generally should not be required to work on a public holiday unless they volunteer or work in listed services such as transport, utilities, hospitality, health care or broadcasting. Legal outcomes still depend on normal hours and the agreement.

May 1 is the fixed national date and falls on Friday in 2026. Public events may discuss workplace safety, fair treatment, wages, skills and productivity, while many households use the day simply for rest. Essential and visitor-facing operations can remain open, so the holiday should not be described as a guaranteed closure of all public and private activity.

How Labour Day is observed

Friday, May 1 is the official 2026 national holiday. Employment rules distinguish voluntary work, listed essential or visitor services, normal hours, overtime and equivalent time off.

Traditions of Labour Day

  • Workplace discussion

Unions, employers and public institutions may discuss safety, skills, wages and fair conditions, although no single national event is compulsory.

  • Recognising essential work

Communities acknowledge people in health, utilities, transport, hospitality and other services who may remain rostered during the holiday.

  • Rest and family time

Workers not scheduled use the Friday holiday for visits, shared meals or recreation according to household and island circumstances.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Vanuatu official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Vanuatu may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
