When is Easter Monday?

In 2026, Easter Monday falls on Monday, April 6, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Easter Monday

Easter Monday follows Easter Sunday and completes Vanuatu’s national Easter break. For participating Christians it extends celebration of the resurrection; for the wider public it provides time for family visits, church conferences, outdoor activities and return journeys. The holiday is nationwide even though religious meaning and household practice are not uniform.

The Public Holidays Act lists Easter Monday, and its date is calculated from Easter rather than fixed to one day of the month. In 2026 Easter Sunday is April 5, making Monday, April 6 the official date. Because the holiday is already defined as a Monday, no weekend-substitution question arises that year.

Public offices and many ordinary workplaces close, while hospitals, utilities, hotels, restaurants, airports, wharves and passenger or freight transport may operate. Employment consequences require care: the law addresses when an employee can be required to work and when overtime or equivalent time off applies, while pay for hours not worked can differ between salaried and hourly arrangements.

How Easter Monday is observed

Monday, April 6 is the official 2026 national holiday. It concludes the Easter break, although transport, health, utility and hospitality services may remain available.

Traditions of Easter Monday

  • Church fellowship

Some congregations continue Easter music, youth activities and meals after Sunday worship, according to their own denominational and island traditions.

  • Outdoor gatherings

Families may share food at beaches, village grounds or homes during the final day of the long Easter break.

  • Return journeys

Travellers allow time for busy or altered flights, boats and roads as people return from worship, conferences and family visits.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Vanuatu official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Vanuatu may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
