When is Kastom Heritage?

In 2026, Kastom Heritage falls on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. It is an observance rather than a federal holiday, so federal offices and most businesses follow their normal schedules.

History of Kastom Heritage

Kastom Heritage is used here as an editorial guide to a broad Bislama term for living bodies of customary knowledge, authority, relationship and practice. In Vanuatu it can include language, land relationships, oral history, exchange, music, dance, craft, food production, conflict resolution and ceremonies, but its meaning and permitted forms vary greatly among islands and communities. No single festival can represent all Ni-Vanuatu kastom, and cultural practice should not be reduced to entertainment organised for visitors.

The Constitution recognises the importance of traditional Melanesian values and gives the Malvatumauri National Council of Chiefs a role in advising on custom and tradition. That constitutional recognition exists alongside Parliament, courts, provincial councils and other statutory institutions. Community authority also remains local: chiefs, families and knowledge holders determine when an event occurs, who may participate and whether photography, recording or public attendance is appropriate.

This calendar entry is an editorial cultural marker, not a public holiday created by Vanuatu’s Public Holidays Act or the Prime Minister’s 2026 schedule. Its September 1 display date is only a neutral calendar position for the guide and must not be presented as an annual national Kastom Day. Travellers, researchers and residents should seek current guidance from the relevant community or provincial authority, respect restrictions without pressing for access and avoid publishing sacred or private knowledge without informed permission.

How Kastom Heritage is observed

This is a non-statutory editorial marker, not a national or provincial public holiday. September 1 is not a legal annual date; actual events, participation and access depend on local community guidance.

Traditions of Kastom Heritage

  • Community permission

Participants ask the appropriate chiefs, families or knowledge holders before entering, photographing, recording or sharing any locally governed ceremony.

  • Language and knowledge

Oral history, environmental knowledge, craft and local language may be passed between generations under protocols set by the community concerned.

  • Responsible cultural exchange

Public festivals can welcome visitors, but respectful guests distinguish an open programme from ceremonies, places or knowledge that remain private or restricted.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Vanuatu cultural, civic or religious guidance. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Vanuatu may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
