When is Assumption Day?
In 2026, Assumption Day falls on Saturday, August 15, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Assumption Day
Assumption Day is the Christian feast associated with the belief that Mary was taken into heavenly glory. It is especially important in Catholic tradition, though Vanuatu’s wider Christian landscape includes many denominations with different teachings and calendars. National public-holiday status gives the date civic effect without implying that every church or resident observes it identically.
Catholic mission history forms part of the wider nineteenth- and twentieth-century growth of Christianity in the New Hebrides. Churches contributed to education, health and community life while also operating within colonial contexts that affected language and culture. Contemporary Catholic parishes are Ni-Vanuatu institutions whose worship and local programmes vary among islands.
August 15 is fixed in the Act and falls on Saturday in 2026. The following-Monday rule applies only when a listed holiday falls on Sunday, so the official 2026 calendar does not automatically create a Monday substitute. Masses and parish activities may occur, while employees and travellers should check actual rosters and opening hours.
How Assumption Day is observed
Saturday, August 15 is the official 2026 national holiday. Vanuatu’s Sunday-substitution rule does not automatically move this Saturday date to Monday.
Traditions of Assumption Day
Mass and prayer
Catholic parishes may celebrate Mass, Marian hymns and prayer, while the exact programme reflects the parish and local community.
Parish hospitality
Participating families may share meals or visits after worship, without implying that all Christian denominations observe the feast identically.
Local schedules
Residents check Saturday transport, shops and public services because the national holiday does not automatically create a following Monday closure.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Vanuatu official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Vanuatu may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
