When is New Year's Day?
In 2026, New Year's Day falls on Thursday, January 1, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of New Year's Day
New Year’s Day opens Vanuatu’s statutory holiday calendar on January 1. The Gregorian date came through European civil administration, yet the contemporary holiday belongs to the whole republic. Households across many islands, churches and language communities use it differently, often continuing visits and meals begun during the Christmas and Family Day period.
The Public Holidays Act includes New Year’s Day in its national schedule. Section 3 provides that when a scheduled holiday falls on Sunday, the following Monday is also a public holiday; it does not create an automatic weekday substitute merely because a date falls on Saturday. The Prime Minister’s Office publishes the practical annual calendar.
In 2026 January 1 is Thursday, so no Sunday substitution applies. Government offices and many ordinary workplaces close, but public-holiday status does not stop every service. Transport, utilities, hotels, restaurants, hospitals and other listed operations may continue. The Employment Act treats compulsory work, time off and overtime differently according to the sector, normal hours and employment agreement.
How New Year's Day is observed
Thursday, January 1 is the official 2026 national holiday. Many offices close, while transport, utilities, health care and tourism may continue under public-holiday rosters.
Traditions of New Year's Day
Church thanksgiving
Participating congregations begin the year with prayer, singing and thanksgiving, while other households mark the civic holiday without a religious service.
Family visits
Relatives may continue Christmas-season meals and visits, adapting plans to distance, weather, transport and responsibilities in their own community.
Island recreation
Beaches, village grounds and visitor sites can be busy, so residents check ferries, flights, buses and local holiday opening times.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Vanuatu official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Vanuatu may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
