When is Father Lini Day?
In 2026, Father Lini Day falls on Saturday, February 21, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Father Lini Day
Father Walter Hadye Lini was an Anglican priest, independence organiser and leader of the Vanua’aku Pati. He became Vanuatu’s first prime minister when the former New Hebrides achieved independence on July 30, 1980. His political ideas linked national sovereignty with Melanesian values, regional solidarity and a development approach often described as Melanesian socialism.
Lini worked in a country emerging from the Anglo-French Condominium, a joint colonial system with parallel British and French institutions and limited Ni-Vanuatu political power. Remembering his leadership does not mean independence was one person’s achievement: chiefs, churches, political organisers, women, rural communities and other leaders also sustained the movement across different islands.
The February 21 public holiday is officially described as a day in memory of the Father of Independence. It falls on Saturday in 2026, and Vanuatu’s Act supplies a substitute only for a Sunday occurrence, not every weekend date. Ceremonies therefore take place on or around February 21 according to government, church and community plans.
How Father Lini Day is observed
Saturday, February 21 is the official 2026 national holiday. The Act does not create a Monday substitute merely because this fixed date falls on Saturday.
Traditions of Father Lini Day
Memorial services
Churches, leaders and institutions may organise prayer, wreaths or speeches remembering Lini’s public life and the independence generation.
Learning independence history
Schools and families revisit the movement’s many participants, the condominium system and the challenges of forming a new island republic.
Leadership discussion
Community programmes may debate sovereignty, regional solidarity and ethical public service rather than presenting commemoration as uncritical hero worship.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Vanuatu official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Vanuatu may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
