When is Christmas Day?
In 2026, Christmas Day falls on Friday, December 25, 2026. It is classified here as a Vatican City public holiday.
History of Christmas Day
Christmas Day celebrates the Nativity of Jesus and is one of the principal feasts of the Catholic year. In Vatican City, it is both a holy day of obligation and a State holiday, bringing together the Church’s universal Christmas liturgy and the practical closure of many Vatican offices.
The Pope’s Christmas Day Mass and the Urbi et Orbi blessing traditionally make Saint Peter’s Square a focal point for pilgrims, diplomats, residents of Rome and viewers around the world. The Latin phrase means ‘to the City and to the World’, an especially fitting expression for a holiday whose local setting is also a global religious centre.
The Vatican’s holiday sequence continues after December 25. The personnel regulation separately includes Christmas Eve, the next two days and December 31, creating a longer institutional pause around the Church’s Christmas octave.
Christmas Day also needs a precise administrative label. Article 27 of the Governorate's personnel regulation gives Vatican City State employees vacation on the listed additional days and incorporates Sundays and the holy days named by canon law; it is not a statute promising identical opening hours across every Holy See body. Essential, liturgical, security and visitor services may continue. Article 26 provides compensatory weekday rest when an employee must work on Sunday, but the regulation does not establish automatic Monday substitution whenever a feast falls at a weekend. The Vatican Museums, Saint Peter's Basilica, post office, pharmacies and papal events therefore publish their own operational notices.
How Christmas Day is observed
A Vatican City holiday and holy day of obligation. The Pope’s Christmas programme and public-access arrangements are published by the Holy See each year. No automatic weekday substitute follows merely because the date falls on Saturday or Sunday; operating institutions publish separate schedules.
Traditions of Christmas Day
Christmas liturgy
The Pope's Christmas programme includes solemn worship in Saint Peter's Basilica, with admission arrangements and the precise hour announced by the Holy See.
Urbi et Orbi
At midday the Pope traditionally delivers a Christmas message and solemn blessing addressed to the city of Rome and the world.
Square nativity and tree
A large crèche and decorated Christmas tree in Saint Peter's Square form a public Vatican display throughout much of the Christmas season.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Holy See and Vatican City official guidance. The Vatican City personnel calendar and papal liturgical programme can differ from the wider Italian calendar.
