When is Good Friday?
In 2026, Good Friday falls on Friday, April 3, 2026. It is classified here as a Vatican City public holiday.
History of Good Friday
Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus and is one of the most solemn days in the Catholic year. Vatican City’s personnel regulation includes it among the final three days of Holy Week, recognising the practical importance of the Triduum for a state whose public life is inseparable from the Church’s central liturgies.
The Holy See’s annual calendar normally includes the Celebration of the Passion of the Lord and an evening Way of the Cross. The latter has become one of Rome’s most recognisable Holy Week observances, often held at the Colosseum rather than inside Vatican City, yet closely connected to the Pope’s pastoral role.
The day is marked by restraint rather than celebration. Visitors should expect security arrangements, crowd controls and changed access around major ceremonies, and should check the current Vatican programme before making plans.
Good Friday also needs a precise administrative label. Article 27 of the Governorate's personnel regulation gives Vatican City State employees vacation on the listed additional days and incorporates Sundays and the holy days named by canon law; it is not a statute promising identical opening hours across every Holy See body. Essential, liturgical, security and visitor services may continue. Article 26 provides compensatory weekday rest when an employee must work on Sunday, but the regulation does not establish automatic Monday substitution whenever a feast falls at a weekend. The Vatican Museums, Saint Peter's Basilica, post office, pharmacies and papal events therefore publish their own operational notices.
How Good Friday is observed
A Vatican City State vacation day. Major Holy Week ceremonies are public religious events, but attendance and access are controlled by the Holy See. No automatic weekday substitute follows merely because the date falls on Saturday or Sunday; operating institutions publish separate schedules.
Traditions of Good Friday
Passion liturgy
The Celebration of the Passion presents Saint John's Passion narrative, the solemn intercessions and veneration of the Cross without a Eucharistic consecration.
Way of the Cross
The Pope's evening Via Crucis normally gathers worshippers at Rome's Colosseum, with meditations and access arrangements announced for that year.
Fasting and abstinence
Catholics of the relevant ages observe Good Friday fasting and abstinence under canon law, giving Vatican activity a deliberately restrained character.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Holy See and Vatican City official guidance. The Vatican City personnel calendar and papal liturgical programme can differ from the wider Italian calendar.
