When is Good Friday?
In 2026, Good Friday falls on Friday, April 3, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Good Friday
Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ and is the most solemn day of the Christian Holy Week. Venezuela’s Organic Labour Law expressly includes Friday of Holy Week among nationwide holidays. That status protects the day as a legal break while allowing Catholic parishes, other Christian congregations and non-religious households to use it in different ways.
Catholic observance centres on the Liturgy of the Passion, veneration of the cross and, in many places, Stations of the Cross or processions. The Eucharist is not celebrated in the ordinary form. Families may choose a simple meatless meal, remain at home or continue Holy Week travel. Local images, routes and devotional customs differ significantly, so no single procession represents the entire country.
Good Friday is calculated two days before Western Easter Sunday and follows Holy Thursday’s evening worship. Churches, dioceses and municipalities publish service times, procession routes and road restrictions annually. Hospitals, emergency services and other permitted operations continue under labour-law exceptions, meaning a statutory holiday should not be read as a complete national shutdown.
How Good Friday is observed
Good Friday is a nationwide statutory holiday observed through solemn Passion liturgies, Stations of the Cross, processions, prayer and quiet family gatherings.
Traditions of Good Friday
Liturgy of the Passion
Catholic communities gather for scripture, intercessions and veneration of the cross in a solemn service distinct from an ordinary Mass.
Stations and processions
Parishes may carry sacred images or pray the Stations of the Cross along local routes announced by diocesan and municipal organisers.
Simple family meals
Some households prepare meatless or modest food and keep a quieter day, connecting family practice with the solemn character of Good Friday.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Venezuela official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Venezuela may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
