When is Labour Day?

In 2026, Labour Day falls on Friday, May 1, 2026. It is classified here as a Vietnamese public holiday.

History of Labour Day

International Labour Day on May 1 places Viet Nam within a global tradition of recognising workers and labour movements. It is a statutory paid holiday and, because it immediately follows Reunification Day, it creates one of the country's familiar spring breaks.

The holiday has both an official civic meaning and an everyday rhythm. Public messaging often recognises labour and production, while families make travel plans around the extended closure. Employers in essential services arrange staffing separately, so transport, hospitality and retail schedules can differ substantially by place.

May 1 entered Viet Nam's modern political and labour calendar through the international workers' movement and was retained as a fully paid statutory holiday in Article 112. Official programmes may emphasise workers' contributions, occupational safety, productivity and trade-union activity, but participation in a ceremony is not a condition of receiving leave. In 2026 Labour Day fell on Friday immediately after Reunification Day on Thursday, creating a four-day interval through Sunday for workers on a standard weekend. Continuous operations could remain staffed, with working time and holiday remuneration governed by labour law rather than by the public-service closure alone.

How Labour Day is observed

One fully paid nationwide statutory holiday on Friday, May 1, 2026; operational employers may roster work subject to statutory holiday-pay rules.

Traditions of Labour Day

  • Recognition of workers

Trade unions, employers and public bodies highlight workers' contributions, workplace safety, skills and changing conditions in Viet Nam's economy.

  • A combined spring break

Because May 1 follows Reunification Day, many families use the paired holidays for visits, domestic tourism and restorative time.

  • Rostered essential services

Transport, hospitals, hotels and continuous production may remain staffed, with lawful holiday pay applying instead of universal closure.
