When is Christmas Day?
In 2026, Christmas Day falls on Friday, December 25, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Christmas Day
Christmas Day commemorates the birth of Jesus and is fixed on December 25 in Zambia’s Public Holidays Act. Catholic, Seventh-day Adventist, Pentecostal, United Church, Reformed, Anglican and other Christian communities may hold Christmas Eve or morning services, but worship style and the place of liturgical calendars differ widely. The holiday’s legal reach does not erase minority faiths or freedom of conscience.
Christmas sits within a year-end period of church activity, commerce and travel between towns and home communities. Mission Christianity was entangled with colonial-era education and institutions, yet contemporary Zambian churches are locally led and diverse, and some households combine Christian and Indigenous practices. Customs should therefore be described as changing community practices rather than a single imported tradition.
Christmas Day is a nationwide public holiday listed in the Schedule to Zambia’s Public Holidays Act. Section 2(2) makes the following Monday a public holiday when a scheduled date falls on Sunday; it provides no Saturday substitute. A 2026 bill to delete that Sunday rule was withdrawn. Employment Code sections 35 and 75 govern paid designation and work on public holidays, so a calendar entry alone does not replace an employee’s contract, collective agreement or applicable statutory instrument.
How Christmas Day is observed
Statutory nationwide public holiday on Friday, December 25, 2026; Zambia does not list Boxing Day as a standing national holiday.
Traditions of Christmas Day
Community practice
Christian families may attend church, sing carols, visit relatives and share food or gifts according to household means and denomination. Practice differs among provinces, language communities, churches, organisations and households, so no one programme represents all Zambians.
Verified programme
Congregations may organise scripture, choirs, children’s programmes and charitable support in English and Zambian languages. Organisers publish the actual venue, theme, timing and participation arrangements for each annual observance.
Planning the day
Book intercity travel early and check service hours; the Friday holiday does not itself make Saturday a separate statutory holiday. Essential, health, security, hospitality and transport services may operate to separate rosters despite public-office closures.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Zambia official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Zambia may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
