When is Good Friday?
In 2026, Good Friday falls on Friday, April 3, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Good Friday
Good Friday in Zimbabwe commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus in Christian tradition. Its statutory place reflects mission Christianity under colonial rule, but contemporary observance belongs to a diverse landscape that includes Catholic and Protestant churches, African Independent Churches and Pentecostal-charismatic movements led by Zimbabweans.
The day begins a legally distinctive sequence: the Act names Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Monday, while the 2026 Gazette also lists Easter Sunday. Some congregations focus on restrained scripture, preaching and prayer; others begin multi-day Passover conferences. Not all Zimbabweans are Christian, and even among churches liturgy, fasting and the importance attached to Easter vary.
Good Friday is Friday, April 3 in 2026. Labour Act section 14C gives covered employees paid leave when the holiday falls on a day they would otherwise work; an employee who consents to work must receive at least twice current remuneration. Rostered services can remain open. The date follows Western Easter; another church calendar does not change the civil holiday.
How Good Friday is observed
Nationwide public holiday on Friday, April 3, 2026, immediately before the separate Easter Saturday. Current government notices, employer policies and local schedules in Zimbabwe should be checked for closures, substitute dates and public-service arrangements.
Traditions of Good Friday
Solemn services
Churches may read Passion narratives, preach, pray or sing in restrained form; programmes differ among Catholic, Protestant, Apostolic and Pentecostal communities.
Conference journeys
Members travel to denominational gatherings, including large African Independent Church conferences, while others worship locally. Relatives and friends may share meals or visit one another, especially when the date forms part of a longer public-holiday period.
Fasting and preparation
Some Christians fast before Easter Sunday; other households prepare for visits and the long weekend, so fasting is not universal.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Zimbabwe official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Zimbabwe may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
