When is Iris Festival?
In 2026, Iris Festival falls on Friday, May 8, 2026. It is classified here as a Regional public holiday.
History of Iris Festival
The Feast of the Iris belongs to the Brussels-Capital Region, one of Belgium’s three Regions. Its official date is May 8. The yellow iris on a blue field is the regional emblem, traditionally linked to irises that grew in the marshy terrain around the Senne and to the historical name and landscape associated with Brussels’ development.
The Brussels-Capital Region was created through Belgium’s federal reforms and obtained its own institutions in 1989. The festival presents that bilingual regional identity through French and Dutch programming while also reflecting a city where many other languages are spoken. Concerts, street activity and institutional open days make regional government and culture visible to residents.
The official feast date and the public festival schedule should not be confused. Major events are often programmed on a nearby weekend in early May rather than exclusively on May 8. The day is not one of Belgium’s ten statutory private-sector holidays, so ordinary businesses do not close automatically. Regional institutions and individual employers publish their own arrangements.
How Iris Festival is observed
May 8 is Brussels-Capital’s official regional feast day, not a nationwide statutory employment holiday; festival events often occur on a nearby weekend.
