When is Labour Day?

In 2026, Labour Day falls on Friday, May 1, 2026. It is classified here as a Belgian public holiday.

History of Labour Day

Labour Day grew from the international campaign for an eight-hour working day at the end of the nineteenth century. Belgium’s early industrialisation, dense coal and steel districts and powerful socialist, Christian and liberal labour organisations gave the date a strong local setting. May Day became an occasion for workers to assert collective rights through speeches, processions, banners and meetings.

The holiday belongs to Belgium’s ten statutory public holidays rather than to one political tradition. Its modern themes can include wages, pensions, workplace safety, equality and international solidarity. Events differ between Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Liège, Charleroi and smaller communities; some are explicitly political, while others combine debate with concerts, food and neighbourhood sociability.

Federal law generally prohibits private-sector employment on statutory holidays, with exceptions where Sunday work is permitted. Holiday pay and compensatory rest apply under the relevant conditions. If May 1 falls on Sunday or a normal inactivity day, the substitute is negotiated at sector or workplace level. That makes it inaccurate to assign one nationwide observed Monday in the calendar.

How Labour Day is observed

May 1 is a statutory private-sector public holiday; demonstrations vary locally, and a weekend substitute date depends on sector or workplace arrangements.

Traditions of Labour Day

  • Union meetings and marches

Belgian trade unions and political movements organise speeches, rallies and cultural programmes focused on work and social protection.

  • Red flags and workers’ songs

Historic labour symbols, movement banners and songs remain visible at larger May Day gatherings in major industrial and urban centres.

  • Springtime social events

Many local programmes pair political discussion with music, shared food, flowers and informal time outdoors with friends or family.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Belgian federal public-holiday guidance. Community and regional dates do not automatically apply throughout Belgium; local and employer schedules may differ.
