When is Ascension Day?
In 2026, Ascension Day falls on Thursday, May 14, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.
History of Ascension Day
Ascension Day commemorates the Christian belief that Jesus ascended into heaven. Counting Easter Sunday as the first day, it falls 39 days later and therefore always on a Thursday. Western Easter on April 5 places Ascension on May 14 in 2026; it is a calculated ecclesiastical date rather than a lunar holiday awaiting a local moon announcement.
Ascension was included in the 1964 list of Congolese legal holidays and retained by Law 2-94 as a non-working and paid date. Catholic and Protestant congregations may mark it with scripture, preaching, Communion or music, while some residents experience it mainly through altered school, office or commercial hours. Friday is legally distinct from the Thursday feast.
Ascension Day is one of the legal holidays that article 1 of Law 2-94 declares a holiday, non-working and paid throughout the Republic of the Congo. Article 2 allows the labour minister to declare other days non-working and/or paid for important events, but neither provision establishes an automatic Monday substitute or bridge day when a listed holiday falls at a weekend. Essential-service rosters may still operate under specific government notices.
How Ascension Day is observed
Paid nationwide legal holiday on Thursday, May 14, 2026. Friday, May 15 remains an ordinary working day unless a specific authority or employer notice says otherwise.
Traditions of Ascension Day
Household and community practice
Christian families may attend worship, rest or visit relatives during the later part of the Easter season. Customs differ between Brazzaville, Pointe-Noire, departmental towns and rural communities, and participation is not uniform across faiths or households.
Public or religious programme
Parishes and congregations arrange scripture, preaching, Communion and music according to Catholic, Protestant or independent-church practice. The relevant authority, congregation or organiser publishes the actual venue, timing and participation arrangements.
Planning the holiday
Verify Friday opening hours directly rather than treating a bridge day after Ascension as automatic. Banks, markets, transport, health care, hospitality, communications and utilities may maintain duty services, so a paid legal holiday should not be read as a universal shutdown.
Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Republic of the Congo official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Republic of the Congo may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
