When is Veterans Day?

In 2026, Veterans Day falls on Wednesday, November 11, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Veterans Day

Veterans Day began as Armistice Day, marking the ceasefire that ended fighting in the First World War at the eleventh hour of November 11, 1918. The United States broadened and renamed it in 1954 to honour veterans of all wars. Unlike Memorial Day, which centres those who died in military service, Veterans Day recognises living veterans as well as deceased former service members and can include attention to health, disability and reintegration after service.

The observance has particular visibility on Guam because many island families have military connections and major U.S. installations occupy significant land. That relationship includes service and employment, but also complex histories of land acquisition, wartime displacement and contemporary debate about military expansion. Respecting veterans does not require treating every resident’s view of militarisation or Guam’s political status as identical; a careful guide leaves space for service, sacrifice and civic disagreement.

Guam Code §1000 fixes Veterans Day on November 11, matching the federal holiday. In 2026 it falls Wednesday. GovGuam and most federal offices close, while military commands continue mission-essential activity and hospitals, utilities and public-safety agencies maintain necessary coverage. Private employers determine holiday work and pay through applicable law and agreements. Ceremonies may occur at veterans’ memorials, cemeteries, schools and community organisations.

How Veterans Day is observed

Wednesday, November 11 is a Government of Guam and U.S. federal holiday in 2026; operational and private-sector schedules may differ.

Traditions of Veterans Day

  • Veterans ceremonies

Public programmes recognise veterans across generations, often including colours, wreaths, music, speeches and a moment of remembrance for those who died.

  • Family recognition

Households may visit veteran relatives, share photographs and service stories, or support elders and people living with service-related injuries.

  • Practical support

Community organisations can connect veterans and families with health, benefits and peer-support information rather than limiting recognition to symbolic thanks.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Guam official holiday calendar or legislation. Government, regional, school and employer schedules in Guam may differ; check the linked official source and current local notices before making time-sensitive plans.
