When is Veterans Remembrance Day?

In 2026, Veterans Remembrance Day falls on Friday, March 6, 2026. It is an observance rather than a federal holiday, so federal offices and most businesses follow their normal schedules.

History of Veterans Remembrance Day

March 6 is named in Kosovo's holiday law as the Day of Memorial and Respect for Veterans. In contemporary state programmes it falls within the three-day commemoration of the Kosovo Liberation Army Epic, associated with the fighting at the Jashari family compound in Prekaz on March 5–7, 1998. Ceremonies remember veterans as well as those killed during the conflict.

Public programmes commonly include tributes at the Adem Jashari Memorial Complex, a memorial academy and ceremonial activities involving public institutions or the Kosovo Security Force. Accounts of the conflict remain politically sensitive and are experienced differently by Kosovo's communities. This guide describes the domestic memorial calendar without treating one commemorative narrative as a universal interpretation of the war.

Article 5.5 of Law No. 03/L-064 classifies this date as a memorial day rather than an Article 2 official holiday. The distinction is practical: it authorises public remembrance but does not automatically create paid nationwide leave or a substitute day when the date falls on a weekend. Municipalities, schools and community organisations decide the scale of programmes, while ordinary working schedules continue unless another specific decision applies.

How Veterans Remembrance Day is observed

Veterans Remembrance and Respect Day is a statutory memorial day, not one of Article 2's paid nationwide public holidays. Schools, employers and public offices normally follow working-day schedules unless a separate decision or local programme says otherwise.

Traditions of Veterans Remembrance Day

  • Prekaz tributes

Officials, veterans' groups and families lay wreaths or pay respects at the Adem Jashari Memorial Complex in Prekaz.

  • Memorial academy

A formal academy brings together speeches, music and historical reflection on the March 1998 events and their legacy.

  • Veterans' recognition

Institutions and associations acknowledge veterans' experiences while discussing welfare, documentation and long-term support for conflict-affected families and survivors.

Dates and observance rules are checked against the official Kosovo official holiday law and government calendar. Islamic dates and weekend substitutions should be confirmed against the annual official calendar and employer schedules.
