When is National Women’s Day?

In 2026, National Women’s Day falls on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. It is an observance rather than a federal holiday, so federal offices and most businesses follow their normal schedules.

History of National Women’s Day

Papua New Guinea’s National Women’s Day is observed on March 24. The Department of Personnel Management issued Circular Instruction No. 07 of 2026 for the year’s observance, distinguishing it from the separate international observance on March 8. Government departments, women’s organisations, churches, schools and community groups may use the national date to recognise women’s leadership, labour and contributions to families, public service and economic life.

Programmes also provide space to discuss barriers that women and girls face, including access to education, health care, safe employment, political representation and freedom from violence. Experiences differ by province, disability, age, language, income and rural or urban location. A responsible account therefore avoids describing women as one uniform group and recognises both achievement and continuing advocacy led by Papua New Guinean women.

National Women’s Day is an observance, not one of the nationwide public holidays declared in the 2026 public-holiday circular. Ordinary government and private workplaces do not automatically close, and attending an event does not by itself create statutory leave. Organisations may hold talks, recognition ceremonies, training, marches or community services according to their own plans. Participants should confirm schedules and accessibility directly with organisers.

How National Women’s Day is observed

National observance on March 24, not a statutory public holiday; workplaces remain open unless an employer or authority announces otherwise.

Traditions of National Women’s Day

  • Recognition events

Government agencies, workplaces and community organisations may highlight women’s leadership, public service, enterprise and often overlooked forms of work.

  • Advocacy and dialogue

Forums can address education, health, economic opportunity, political representation, disability inclusion and prevention of gender-based violence. Food, visits, music or shared activities give the observance an everyday form that can differ between regions and generations.

  • Community-led activities

Local organisers may arrange talks, training, walks, church programmes or practical support shaped by the priorities of women in that community.
