When is Tabaski?

In 2026, Tabaski falls on Wednesday, May 27, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Tabaski

Tabaski is the widely used West African name for Eid al-Adha, the Feast of Sacrifice on 10 Dhu al-Hijjah. It recalls Ibrahim's willingness to obey God and coincides with the Hajj period. Communal prayer and a sermon precede sacrifice for households able and choosing to provide an approved animal.

Meat is divided for household, relatives and people in need, placing generosity above display. Cost, animal health and household circumstances mean not every Muslim performs a sacrifice. Christians may exchange greetings or food within mixed-faith families, but the religious rite remains Islamic and practices vary among Sierra Leonean Muslim traditions.

Tabaski is named in the schedule to the Public Holidays Act and appears in the official 2026 calendar. Cap. 58 closes public offices and banks and moves a scheduled holiday falling on Sunday to the next day that is not already a public holiday; it does not create a general Saturday substitute. Under the Employment Act, paid-public-holiday protections expressly reach casual and temporary workers, and qualifying excess hours on public holidays attract a 100% supplement absent a different written agreement.

How Tabaski is observed

Nationwide public holiday confirmed by State House notice for Wednesday, May 27, 2026; later dates await lunar confirmation.

Traditions of Tabaski

  • Household and community practice

Muslims attend morning prayer, hear the khutbah, exchange greetings and, where able, sacrifice livestock and distribute meat. Practice differs among regions, congregations, ethnic communities, mixed-faith families and households with different resources.

  • Documented public observance

A documented Presidential Lodge service paired the Abraham narrative with prayer for pilgrims, peace, integrity and national service. This is documented Sierra Leonean practice, not a claim that every town stages the same programme.

  • Practical planning

Buy animals through lawful and hygienic channels, plan market traffic and await the government notice before fixing future Gregorian dates. Confirm the current State House, transport, congregation and employer notices before relying on hours or access.
