When is Workers’ Day?

In 2026, Workers’ Day falls on Friday, May 1, 2026. It is classified here as a paid public holiday.

History of Workers’ Day

Workers’ Day is Sierra Leone's May 1 expression of International Workers' Day, a commemoration rooted in nineteenth-century campaigns for shorter hours and adopted internationally by labour movements. In Sierra Leone it gives unions, employers and government a public setting for wages, safety, social protection, skills and employment policy.

The workforce includes farmers, miners, fishers, traders, domestic workers, transport operators, public servants and a large informal economy as well as formally organised employees. The 2025 programme introduced a National Labour Conference and tripartite social-dialogue forum before the march, illustrating substantive labour practice beyond ceremonial praise.

Workers’ Day is a nationwide public holiday maintained through presidential public notices under the Public Holidays Act and is included in the official 2026 tourism calendar. Cap. 58 protects public-office and bank closure and authorises necessary government work; the Employment Act supplies paid-public-holiday and premium rules in specified employment contexts. Private and essential-service arrangements still require the applicable contract, roster and notice.

How Workers’ Day is observed

Nationwide public holiday on Friday, May 1, 2026; employment and premium treatment depend on the Employment Act, agreements and actual hours worked.

Traditions of Workers’ Day

  • Household and community practice

Workers may rest, meet colleagues, join union activities or raise workplace concerns; informal and essential workers may experience the day differently. Practice differs among regions, congregations, ethnic communities, mixed-faith families and households with different resources.

  • Documented public observance

The documented programme combines a workers' march with government-employer-union dialogue and a National Labour Conference. This is documented Sierra Leonean practice, not a claim that every town stages the same programme.

  • Practical planning

Participants should check march routes, while rostered workers verify public-holiday pay and compensatory arrangements. Confirm the current State House, transport, congregation and employer notices before relying on hours or access.
