When is International Women’s Day?

In 2026, International Women’s Day falls on Sunday, March 8, 2026. It is classified here as a Ukrainian public holiday.

History of International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day grew from international campaigns for women’s political participation, fair work and equal rights. In Ukraine, March 8 has been part of the public calendar through very different historical periods, and contemporary observance increasingly places the emphasis on women’s rights, achievements and the unequal burdens women can carry in public and private life.

The date remains in Article 73 of the Labour Code. Flowers and personal greetings are common, but the holiday is richer than a gift-giving custom: public discussion, exhibitions and community events can also address equality, women’s work, education, leadership and safety. Its meaning is shaped by the people and organisations choosing to mark it.

International Women’s Day in Ukraine remains part of the permanent public-holiday framework in Article 73 of Ukraine’s Labour Code. In ordinary operation, Article 67 transfers a rest day to the following weekday when a listed holiday coincides with a weekly rest day. During any legally declared period of martial law, however, Article 6 of the special labour-relations act temporarily disapplies Articles 67 and 73. That suspension does not abolish or rename the holiday; it means the calendar date does not itself guarantee paid non-working time until the ordinary provisions resume. Employers and institutions must follow the law in force for the relevant year.
